Buckling Up for Life: Adult Seat Belt Safety

Leading by Example, Saving Lives

Seat belts are one of the simplest and most effective tools for saving lives in motor vehicle crashes. While children and teens learn safety habits from adults, it’s crucial that adults consistently model proper seat belt use — every trip, every seat, every time.

Advocates: Empowering Communities to Buckle Up

Safety professionals, educators and community leaders play a vital role in promoting adult seat belt use.

Ways to Support Adult Seat Belt Safety

  • Share data and stories that highlight the impact of seat belt use
  • Promote primary enforcement laws, which increase compliance rates [Facts about Seat Belt Use]
  • Encourage workplace and community campaigns that normalize buckling up

Adults: The First Line of Defense in Vehicle Safety

Despite widespread awareness, nearly half of passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2023 were not wearing seat belts.

Adults must recognize their role in protecting themselves and influencing others — especially children and teens — by buckling up. [Vehicle Safety/Seat Belts]

Why Seat Belts Matter for Adults

  • Seat belts reduce fatal injury risk by 45% in passenger cars and 60% in light trucks [Occupant Protection | Seat Belts]
  • Seat belts prevent ejection, which is almost always deadly
  • Seat belts work with airbags to provide maximum protection
  • Use of seat belts sets a powerful example for children and teens

Common Misconceptions About Seat Belts

Myth

  • You are less likely to be in a crash when traveling short distances.
  • Airbags will protect you, so seat belts are not necessary.
  • Riding in the back seat is safer. Seat belts are not as important in the back.

Truth

  • Most fatal crashes happen close to home.
  • Airbags are designed to work with the seat belt, not replace them.
  • Rear-seat passengers are less likely to wear seat belts, but just as vulnerable in a crash. [Facts about Seat Belt Use]

Every Ride Counts

Whether you’re commuting, working, running errands, or traveling, buckling up should be automatic.

Proper Seat Belt Use Checklist

Positioning

  • Lap belt lies low across the hips, not the stomach
  • Shoulder belt crosses the chest and collarbone, not the neck or face
  • Belt is not twisted or tangled
  • Back is against the seat, and feet are on the floor
  • Knees bend comfortably at the seat edge

Consistency

  • Buckled up every time, in every seat
  • All passengers are buckled before the vehicle moves
  • Seat belt use is a non-negotiable rule for all ages
  • Adults model proper seat belt use for children and teens
  • Replace seat belt if it is damaged or not functioning properly

Fit and Comfort

  • Seat belt fits snugly but comfortably
  • Do not slouch or shift to get comfortable
  • Never place shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back
  • Use seat belt height adjuster (if available) to position the shoulder belt across the collar bone, not on the neck or off the shoulder.

Other Safety Adjustments

  • Position the head restraint (if adjustable) so the top of the restraint is at least even with the top of the adult occupant’s ears, and ideally the top of the head.
  • Slide the seat forward or backward to ensure knees are slightly bent when the foot is on the brake pedal.
  • Adjust the seat back angle to support a relaxed posture. Be careful not to over recline causing the seat belt to not make contact with the body.
  • Drivers should just all mirrors to maintain a clear view of the surrounding traffic.
  • Drivers should use correct steering wheel adjustments to contribute to comfort and safety. Arms should be slightly bent when the hands are at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions on the steering wheel. The steering wheel should be kept at least 9-10″ away from the body.
